Nintendo has yet to announce a release date for most of the other games that were shown in the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack's initial reveal, including Pokémon Snap and the Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. The new Switch port will mark the first time the game has been officially playable on a Nintendo console in over 20 years. While remaining competitors, Nintendo and Microsoft now have a much more friendly relationship with each other, as Microsoft allowed the bear and bird to appear as guest DLC characters in Nintendo's crossover fighter, Super Smash Bros. This port was later re-released as part of Rare Replay, a compilation of the developer's classic titles, which was released for the Xbox One in 2015. An HD port of Banjo Kazooie was developed for the Xbox 360 in 2008. While Rare was synonymous with Nintendo throughout the 1990s, in 2000 the company was sold to Microsoft, and since then the developer has been dedicated to creating titles exclusively for the Xbox line of consoles. The game was well received upon its initial release and is now widely regarded as one of them best examples of the "collectathon," a term that refers to a style of 3D platforming games that began with 1996's similarly celebrated Super Mario 64 and remained popular throughout the late '90s and early '00s. The game was followed by a sequel, Banjo Tooie, in 2000, which is less fondly remembered.

Nintendo chose to sell the machine on the merits of its fast-loading cartridge system and the insignificant fact that it featured a 64-bit architecture - unfortunately for Nintendo, people were more impressed by high-capacity CD media, in-game movie sequences and pre-recorded soundtracks than fast loading and the size of the machine's pipeline. Although it was a much higher powered machine than Sony's Playstation or Sega's Saturn, the N64 always lagged behind in sales. The N64 was released in mid-1996 as Nintendo's front-runner in the original next-gen console wars.
